Autism+ Travel & Tales

Those on the Autism spectrum, along with other neurodivergent individuals with debilitating conditions, find travel daunting, and for many, impossible. We wish for life outside our four walls, being able to have fun, to enjoy life’s little pleasures. But how can we escape for a vacation when there are so many triggers ready to take us down? I’m experimenting. I’m venturing out of my comfort zone and attempting to travel. I don’t know how it will go, how many triggers await, but I’ll try. Something has to change so that vacationing can be an enjoyable and refreshing experience for neurodivergent individuals.

My Travel Memoir page combines my health journey with travel to unique destinations that I hope will reignite my imagination, help me find healing and peace, and be fun getaways. Arranged in chapters, you can follow along at your own pace.

Follow 12-year-old Amelia Reegenpaupp, her best friend, Kai, along with a few quirky friends as they battle to restore imagination before Mortimer Media III destroys it once and for all.

Becky Steiner

Hi, I’m Becky, a neurodivergent writer and whimsical creative. I’m on a quest to reclaim my childlike enthusiasm for life, my enchanting imagination, and the joy of my salvation in Jesus Christ. Storied, themed, holistic, histories mysteries, and nature destinations are what sparks my curiosity.

But I have several obstacles to overcome.

I’m on the Autism spectrum. I battle the cruel villains Anxiety, Depression (at times suicidal ideation), Panic disorder, PTSD, and a Neurocognitive disorder.  I suffer debilitating episodes when I go out into the public. Panic attacks can strike at any moment, leaving a wave of aftershocks that cause meltdowns. I’m slow at processing information and finding the right words. I’m crowd claustrophobic.

How in the world can I travel with these conditions? There are millions of neurodivergent individuals who have the same fears and apprehension. So, I have a vision. I have dreams. I have hope. There are many happy places in the USA that I want to experience. Many places that offer solace, fun, escape, renewal, and joy. I will find these places and write about them, whether I travel to the destinations in person or in my imagination.

Neuro Definitions

Defining Terms

Society is neurotypical. Everyone is neurodiverse. But few are neurodivergent. All these neuro- terms can be confusing. Let me define the terms since I’ll be using them frequently.

  • Neurotypical. Neurotypical describes people of “typical development, intellectual, and cognitive abilities.” In other words, these are the people who function in step with the majority of the population.

  • Neurodiverse. Neurodiversity refers to everyone! All people are unique and different in how their brain processes information, learns, behaves, and develops.

  • Neurodivergent. Neurodivergent refers to people whose brains work differently than the typical brain. These are people who have different strengths and struggles compared to someone whose brain functions typically. Examples of neurodivergent conditions include:

    • Autism

    • ADHD

    • Tourette's Syndrome

    • Dyslexia

    • Down Syndrome

    • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

    • Bipolar Syndrome

    • Anxiety disorders

    • Intellectual disabilities

    • Sensory Processing disorders

    • Neurocognitive disorders

    • And others.

I’m neurodivergent. I have conditions in my brain that are not typical and that can be debilitating in some areas of life.

But this will not stop me from pursuing my dreams. Will I succeed? Only time will tell as I chronicle my journey into Autism+ Travel & Tale adventures.

My Disney dream vacation from 2018 didn’t go so well. I admire Walt Disney and love Disney World, but as of today, it doesn’t bode well for neurodivergents like me, and it’s insanely expensive. Praying these challenges to vacationing at Disney will changes for the better, soon.
